MHz Re-Releases The Rare LP “Table Scraps” Supporting The Family Of Camu
Tao
Available for purchase at Best Buy, Barnes & Noble and iTunes
September 1, 2009 -- Woodbridge, VA -- Man Bites Dog Records today
announced the re-release of Table Scraps, the out-of-print and rare 2001
album from MHz. First released in 2001 on the label NCS, the critically
acclaimed and much sought after album is available today at US retailers
Best Buy and Barnes & Noble, as well as digital retailers worldwide.
This re-release honors the late band member Camu Tao, who succumbed
to a long-term battle with lung cancer in May 2009. A portion
of the proceeds from the sale of the album will go towards supporting Camu
Tao's family, who still reside in Ohio. Sadly, Tao was in the midst
of preparing his solo debut with the imprint, Definitive Jux, when he passed.
As the first Hip Hop group from Columbus, Ohio – a feat certified by
the VIBE History Of Hip Hop book – MHz consisted of veteran MC Copywrite,
Tao, famed producer and electronic artist RJD2, and respected emcees Jakki
Da Mottamouth and Tage future.
"Nelson Morales gave me the MHz demo circa 1997 at me and Rich Medina’s
store Footwork Illadelph, and I took immediate attention to it . . . so
much so that the very week the cassette was put into my hands, I played
it on my WKCR 89.9FM radio program (voted the best hip hop show of all
time by Source Magazine). I had a label at that time so I reached
out Copywrite and Camu about releasing the tunes on vinyl. The release
of "World Premier" was amongst the most seminal recordings that came out
on Fondle’Em Records. Artists relevant today, including Cage, MF Doom,
etc. all started with me back then. I was proud to see the immediate
acceptance of MHz, and then to see Copywrite, Rjd2 and Camu release solo
projects and all gather critical acclaim." States Bobbito Garcia, a.k.a.
Kool Bob Love, Creative Chief Project 2050.
“In the late 90's in Ohio, Camu and Copywrite were at the top of the
heap of Columbus rappers. They had everyone's ear in the city, so to be
working with them, and making music that was actually getting released
on a label was exciting,” commented RJD2. “Those two guys were so dedicated;
they might not have their own place, but would still have a cassette deck
or something cheap as hell to record on. Their whole vibe was completely
rugged, fly by night, wild abandon. Really wild shit was going on. Just
extremely naturally talented guys. It was a very seat of the pants, once
in a lifetime experience for me.”
"Once Camu learned how to make beats, he took it to another level,
and he was crazy with his style,” said Copywrite. “He always wanted to
do something different. He never wanted to sound like anybody else. He
wanted to have his own shit. He wanted to have something that you couldn't
get from anywhere else.”
Throughout the late '90s and early '00s, MHz released various singles
from the album on Fondle 'Em, ABB, Definitive Jux, Eastern Conference,
High Times and Rawkus Records. Many of these tracks were on the MHz original
demos that eventually led the group to an album deal. The MHz members eventually
became involved in a variety of other projects including the super-groups
The Weathermen (founded by Copywrite an Cage) and El-P. They never
got a chance to develop the MHz sound further, much to the dismay of their
devoted fan base.
Today all of the members are making their individual marks in music,
but the original record, Table Scraps, is an amazing must-have for any
hip hop music lover. By rediscovering Table Scraps’ colorful, raw sound,
Camu Tao’s talent will be appreciated by a new generation of virgin ears.
Fans interested in supporting Tao's family should seek out the 2009 version
with updated cover artwork.
“We were living the dream. It didn't matter how shitty we were
living, or how much we were struggling, we were just happy to be in the
mix, to get on stage and rep Ohio, and put our music out there," professed
Copywrite.
MHz is not over. In 2010 each the of the remaining members will put
all of their powers together to record the MHz album entitled Tero Smith,
which is the government name of Tao. MHz intends to keep Camu Tao's legacy
going and they will stop at nothing to bring his music to the world.
