Three 6 Mafia Takes Home Oscar and Makes Academy Awards History
MEMPHIS, TN (Rap Newswire) March 5th, 2006 - Memphis rap group Three 6 Mafia took home the award for Best Original Song at the 78nd Annual Academy Awards. Three 6 Mafia performed their original song "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" with songstress and actress Taraji Henson, right before winning their Oscar Academy Award for Best Original Song from the movie "Hustle and Flow" which was written by Memphis native Craig Brewer and directed by John Singleton. The song "It's Hard Out Here For A Pimp" was written by Paul "DJ Paul" Beauregard and Jordon "Juicy J" Houston of Three Six Mafia, along with Cedric "Frayser Boy" Coleman.
Three 6 Mafia fellow nominees for Best Original Song included "Travel Through" for TransAmerica which was written by country singer, actress and songwriter Dolly Parton and also "In The Deep" for the movie Crash written by Kathleen “Bird” York and Michael Becker.
This was the first ever Academy Awards performance for any rapper which a previous offer to perform was given to Eminem, but was denied in 2003.
Three Six Mafia's latest album, Most Known Unknown, peaked the Billboard Top 100 R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart at #1 and currently holds the #16 spot and also holds #6 on the Top Rap Albums charts. Both will most likely soar after their award winning performance at the Oscars.
Most Known Unknown has been certified gold by the RIAA for the shipment of over 500,000 CD's and is quickly approaching platinum status.
